She was already gone, a thing of the past, largely no thanks to her Glitter and Charmbracelet (even if they had some worth listening to), until she released The Emancipation of Mimi, and a career was re-born. Fortunately so, too, because a Mariah Carey comes but once in a lifetime (something Whitney Houston has failed to realize for her own good, with her wasting of her talent and all). Follow that up with E=MC2 (no, not any attempt to be Albert Einstein-like!), Carey’s tenth solo album that showcases her extremes – from all sexed up sexy kitten in Touch My Body (how much more sexual can you get that with that?) to the born again church-going Bye-Bye, and what you have is a guaranteed hit.
While her collaborators in the past included Snoop Dogg, Nelly, and Twista, this time, there are Damien Marley, T-Pain, and Young Jeezy – partnerships that Tom Young of BBC Music describes as “sublime,” highlighting Carey’s musical prowess since “Carey handles every style that her producers throw at her with mind-boggling vocal dexterity.”
Young adds: “It doesn't take Einstein to calculate the secret of Carey's success. A voice with such ability that it could probably kill added to a reputation that many would kill for equals a global appeal that's spawned 11 studio albums and 150 million odd worldwide sales… and counting.”
No, unfortunately, we don’t really hear the now famous eight-octave vocal range; but this is a pleaser all the same. Regine Velasquez, indeed, even if we love, love, love her, still has a long, long, long way to go, as Carey continues to sing Bye Bye sans the need for her to leave. |
