PinoyPride.org
Source of Pride…
Sana…
By Kiki Tan
PinoyPride.org has been in existence for as long as I can remember – and for as long as I can remember, too, it has been a source of pride. Or at least it could have been…
GOOD
Among the pioneers that aimed to provide a voice for the Pinoy LGBT community in the early World Wide Web, PinoyPride.org was, for a while there, the gay site for the Pinoy gay, made by Pinoy gays. In this alone, it somehow worked – information, after all, is only as good as its application in contexts, so localizing is all there is to it, really, and this site did that.
It did so, too, with a voice – PinoyPride.org actually has a stance, a position, for the community. Of course, whether the position is the entire community’s is beside the point – after all, any position won’t be everybody’s. The good thing is, even if not everybody agrees with the stance, it does not only give a voice from inside, it actually makes even those inside the community talk about the issue.
BAD
The unfortunate thing about PinoyPride.org is its immobility. I honestly don’t know if it has been recently updated – and even if it has been, I most certainly can’t tell so. This perspective is not helped, in any way, by the blog look of the site, so that: 1) You get the feel that whatever is written there is the singular opinion of the writer/s, not necessarily the community’s (at least not of many, not anymore) because you fail to hear varying opinions; and 2) Exactly because of the blog look, you’d expect for more frequent updates to be made.
WELL, WE TRY…
That you can’t fault any one as long as they try may be the lesson to apply here – PinoyPride.org did help pioneer the community’s causes online. I really hope they try again (harder, too) – we need all the help we can get in putting our position/s out there. And only if/when we do that, even if/when we only try, can we really be a source of pride |
