Dear Mr. President
GLBTQI Letters to Pres. Benigno Simeon Aquino III
GLBTQIA Filipino

Is he pro-equality?
Prior to his election, Aquino – interviewed by The Philippine Star – was quoted as saying that he believes in equal treatment for LGBTs.  At least to some extent. To wit: “Gays shouldn't be discriminated against in terms of occupation and other aspects.” Aquino added, however, that while LGBTs shouldn’t be discriminated against, “I'm not prepared to support (gay marriage).” Wth his so-so approach to LGBT issues, here are letters from LGBTs for the President.

Turning Yellow
Will the Aquino euphoria keep Noynoy’s image as the “Messiah” for six years? Or will the people, eventually, wake up from their illusions and see reality? Will the promises he made during his speeches save us from hate and inequality? Words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning. But will his actions offer the same meaning as his words? Patrick King Pascual writes about a country getting yellow fever.

Bi Male Community
Highlighting the Best of Bi
By Mikee dela Cruz
Bi Male Community
On October 15, 2006, Radz Morada spearheaded the formation of the Bi Male Community (BMC) – a group that aimed to highlight the existence of a bisexual male community in the Philippines.  The group is contentious – but the intent is not too dissimilar from other groups in the GLBTQIA community: To push for acceptability of the diversity within the community.

We are Our Only Hope
Group Games
GLBTQIs are largely inexistent in the Philippine laws, with the only mention of homosexuality done as a ground for separation from a husband/wife, thus dissolution of marriage. While we do what other Filipinos do - e.g. pay (often more than our heterosexual counterparts') taxes, abide by the laws of the land, contribute to the growth of the nation, et cetera - GLBTQIAs remain second-class citizens. LGBTs should no longer wait for changes to just happen. The time is now to be proactive. The time has come to change how we are treated.changing all that.

Building Brotherhood

On April 1, 2010, Jonathan Orbuda formed Cute Pinoy (CP), described as an “all-male online social organization (intending to) build brotherhood as an advocacy (through the) gathering of Filipinos and Filipinos-at-heart (thereby) creating distinctive friendship.” As Orbuda says, CP’s online existence was due to the fact that “nowadays, the Net plays a role in our daily lives – it has become an avenue to finding... friends and/or lovers.  It has made any course of action (taken) convenient.”

STRAP
Thou Art Woman

When the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines was founded in 2002, it was a response to the need of an organization that would focus on the issues, concerns, and needs of the transgender community in the Philippines. Eight years on, and STRAP has established itself as a force to be reckoned with.

After a suicide attempt, “I lived with a deep sense of purpose: I would help initiate a transgender movement in the Philippines, and I’d like to become part of a group that would help initiate change in our society. I want a society that would cherish, value, and respect the flourishing of one’s individuality,” recalls Sass Rogando Sasot, who helped establish STRAP that now help to empower transpinays.

M4M Philippines
Celebratory Quest
When MSM online social network M4MPhilippines was established (officially) on February 16, 2010 by collaborators Pablo, Vash, Calvin and Zico, it was simply to keep alive a group that decided to break away from another networking group. Over time, though, it has evolved as its members saw that they can be more.

“I was diagnosed to be infected with HIV back in 2008.  I realized that since I will be HIV positive for the rest of my life, I might as well be productive with the remaining time I have,” Humphrey Gorriceta recalls. And, so, a much-needed advocate in the fight against HIV and AIDS in the Philippines comes into existence.

On the men who fancy us...
Sass Rogando SasotInterviewed during the 2002 Gay Games in Sydney, Sass Rogando Sasot was asked: "Is the attraction of men towards transsexual women just an effect of the influx of ‘shemale porns’? Is this attraction just an expression of hypersexuality?”

Hail to the Queen
Raquela Rios
“If one wants to undergo sexual reassignment surgery to be happy, go for it.  But for me, I choose to be a non-op since I know I am a woman, a transsexual woman. I don’t need (any) process of going under the knife to make me a woman.” So says Raquela Rios, star of The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela, who helps re-define what it means to be a woman.

Stop the Hate
Hate crimes against Filipino GLBTQIs need to come in focus - urgently, need since gay murders have become common in the Philippines, and with many GLBTQIs even internalizing the blame for crimes committed against them.

Under Pressure
Patrick King Pascual writes that "we all have standards we unconsciously follow in everything we do - dating included. But every time we feel desperate, we forget we have standards, so that when we meet someone who doesn't even meet them, we allow ourselves to fall."
