GLBTQIs and Domestic Violence
Should Love Hurt?
By Mikee dela Cruz
GLBTQIA Filipino

Should love hurt for it to feel good?
In 2009, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Women and Children Protection Center Chief noted the “alarming” increase in the incidence of domestic violence (in an observed period in 2008) in the Philippines.  From 6,647 incidents of violence against women in 2007, the PNP WCPC reported 7,864 cases in 2008 - these include incidents involving violations of Republic Act 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004), which increased from 2,387 cases in 2007 to 3,599 cases in 2008. Domestic violence, however, does not only affect heterosexuals, with GLBTQI relationships also affected. Outrage Magazine takes a closer look.

Batanes Islands
Top Islands
Considered as the Philippines' version of the Middle Earth (think J.R.R. Tolkien's awe-inspiring Lord of the Rings). Or the Marlboro Country.
Fly SEAIR Or the mystical lands of the Irish. Batanes, the northernmost group of islands of the Philippines continue to be a constant source of wonder, so that they are, indeed, worth discovering over and over and over again. Outrage Magazine helps jumpstart the discovery of these enchanting islands up north with a closer look at why they should definitely (DEFINITELY) not be missed and be visited.

Group GamesWe are Our Only Hope
GLBTQIs are largely inexistent in the Philippine laws. While we do what other sources of Pinoy pride do, e.g. pay (often more than our heterosexual counterparts') taxes, abide by the laws of the land, contribute to the growth of the nation, et cetera, GLBTQIAs remain second-class citizens. The time is now to change all that.

M4M Philippines
Celebratory Quest
M4M Philippines
When MSM online social network M4MPhilippines was established (officially) on February 16, 2010 by collaborators Pablo, Vash, Calvin and Zico, it was simply to keep alive a group that decided to break away from another networking group. Over time, though, it has evolved as its members saw that they can be more - and, as such, can do more. And so comes a group "aiming to be the leading community in bringing together individuals in a (gathering) strengthened by fun."

Chemically Yours
A Closer Look at Chemical Safety Amid Rising HIV/AIDS Cases
Chemical Safety
Amid stern warning from health officials against potential HIV/AIDS “explosion,” a waste and pollution watchdog has pushed for vigorous action to prevent and control harmful chemicals that can further weaken and damage the immune system. The EcoWaste Coalition stressed the importance of preventing human exposure to toxic substances that are known to damage immunological functions and cause other serious health issues.

“We now know that the HIV/AIDS situation in the country has already reached pandemic proportions, and we realize that addressing this issue needs a multi-sectoral approach,” says Emman Alfonso of DKT Philippines. The group is now among the staunchest (and much needed) advocates of safer sex in the Philippines.

Love of Another
What happens when different colors combine? We're talking skin colors, of course - i.e. racial differences as exemplified by the tones of the skin. Outrage Magazine takes a closer look at intercultural and/or interracial relationships - the dynamics in/around these relationships, and whether it is worth it giving it a try.

A Gay Filipino in Shanghai
Gay Shanghai
Everything bad has been said about the People's Republic of China - and this, says Mikee dela Cruz, is what's bad, as it limits the discovery of the place that offers numerous surprises.

On the men who fancy us...
Sass Rogando SasotInterviewed during the 2002 Gay Games in Sydney, Sass Rogando Sasot was asked: "Is the attraction of men towards transsexual women just an effect of the influx of ‘shemale porns’? Is this attraction just an expression of hypersexuality?” She now shares her thoughts to Outrage Magazine's readers.

Happy Ending (A Blessing in Disguise)
Outrage Magazine columnist Calex is thankful that everything ended on the second dinner date. "At least at this point, I was already warned: STOP!" she says.

STRAP
Thou Art Woman

When the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines was founded in 2002, it was a response to the need of an organization that would focus on the issues, concerns, and needs of the transgender community in the Philippines. Eight years on, and STRAP has established itself as a force to be reckoned with.

After a suicide attempt, “I lived with a deep sense of purpose: I would help initiate a transgender movement in the Philippines, and I’d like to become part of a group that would help initiate change in our society. I want a society that would cherish, value, and respect the flourishing of one’s individuality,” recalls Sass Rogando Sasot, who helped establish STRAP that now help to empower transpinays.

A statuesque 6’1” Filipina in a bright horizontally striped, orange, green, yellow and blue bikini can’t be missed. But more so a Filipina transgender who isn’t afraid to show off her body.

“I was diagnosed to be infected with HIV back in 2008.  I realized that since I will be HIV positive for the rest of my life, I might as well be productive with the remaining time I have,” Humphrey Gorriceta recalls. And, so, a much-needed advocate in the fight against HIV and AIDS in the Philippines comes into existence.

Naomi Fontanos

"While the biggest challenge facing our community is unity... luckily, the framework ‘GLBTQIA rights are human rights’ puts everyone on the same page." So says Naomi Fontanos, head of STRAP, as she advocates for the recognition of GLBTQIA rights.

Raquela Rios
Hail to the Queen
Raquela Rios
“For me everyone is entitled (to be who and what) they want to be. If one wants to undergo sexual reassignment surgery to be happy, go for it.  But for me, I choose to be a non-op since I know I am a woman, a transsexual woman. I don’t need (any) process of going under the knife to make me a woman.” So says Raquela Rios, star of The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela, who helps re-define what it means to be a woman.

Facing Violence Against Us
By Mikee dela Cruz
Stop the Hate
Hate crimes against Filipino GLBTQIs need to come in focus - urgently, need since gay murders have become common in the Philippines, and with many GLBTQIs even internalizing the blame for crimes committed against them.

Questioning Transphobia
Sass Rogando Sasot
Speaking at the United Nations, Sass Rogando Sasot notes that "the sincerity of our intention to address the human rights violations against transgender people rests upon the depth of our appreciation of human diversity and the breadth of our understanding of why transgender people suffer these indignities," she said.

In the Name of Service
Ryan SilverioWhat was just a requirement to complete his undergraduate degree led to Ryan Silverio becoming a GLBTQIA advocate in the Philippines. It was, he recalls, "a chance for me to find reasons why I feel different from the heterosexist world, and how I can contribute to the change process.”

Under Pressure
Patrick King Pascual writes that "we all have standards we unconsciously follow in everything we do - dating included. But every time we feel desperate, we forget we have standards, so that when we meet someone who doesn't even meet them, we allow ourselves to fall, looking at things differently just to experience being with someone for a week, a month, or until we wake up to reality."

Power to the Transpinay
Asking a person when he/she became what he/she is, is in itself discriminatory, like asking when a leopard recognized its spots, Dee Mendoza says.  “I was born the way I am, therefore, who I am is innate in me.”
